Lately, vacations have been a quick weekend getaway. We haven’t planned a long trip in a while partly because of our pup and also because there are still projects we want to do on the house.
Our recent getaway was to Ogunquit, Maine for two nights. We went to Kennebunkport last year and loved it so much that we decided to stay at a different, but similar part of Maine. I will say off the bat, we liked Kennebunkport a little better but the beach was definitely nicer and bigger in Ogunquit. We prefer a more secluded, less crowded type of beach which Kennebunkport had.
If you go during the week, it’ll probably be less crowded but the beaches were definitely beautiful and cristal clear and the water was surprisingly not ice cold. Cold yes, but manageable.
Where We Stayed
Anchorage by the Sea
There weren’t a lot of options when we booked since we were so last minute but we managed to get one of the last rooms at the Anchorage By the Sea which is right on Marginal Way and along the rocky coast. The location was great and had beautiful views of the ocean. It didn’t have direct beach access but there was an outdoor pool and we were a 12 minute walk from the beach and 5 minutes from downtown.
What We Did
Shopping on Shore Drive
The first day was a bit rainy so we shopped Shore Drive in downtown Ogunquit which was so quaint. None of the shops were too upscale, which was nice. It was a mix of casual clothing, nautical decor, art and jewelry. Some of the more upscale shops were in Perkins Cove, about a mile from downtown Ogunquit.
Ogunquit Beach
The beach had miles of sandy shore and clear water. My favorite was when it was low tide, allowing for plenty of space and a large sandbar. It was foggy our second day, but we still enjoyed it!
Ice Cream
We went out for ice cream at Rococo’s in downtown Ogunquit. Rococo’s is Maine made and has a vegan option which I tried and was good but opted for the traditional ice cream and got the dark chocolate and coffee–so good!
Marginal Way to Perkins Cove
After ice cream we walked Marginal Way all the way to Perkins Cove, which is a mile stretch of cliff walks with picturesque coastal views. They were breathtaking.
The last day was beautiful with blue skies so I took advantage of the weather and went for a run along Marginal Way. I stopped to take quite a few pictures. The coastal, rocky views are why I love Maine so much.
Where We Ate
Lobster Rolls
The lobster rolls were my favorite in Perkins Cove and Matt loved the whole belly clam strips. Footbridge Lobster is where it’s at for a quick lunch. I got the plain lobster roll, it also can be ordered with butter or mayo.
The Lobster Shack was packed but we didn’t get to check it out since the line was so long, I’m sure the lobster rolls are just as good.
Tapas and Oysters
For dinner we wanted something light so we tried a tapas place called La Orilla it was so good! A little pricey given the amount of food but everything was delicious. We split a cheese board, clam chowder, polenta fries, and oysters. The oysters were local and so fresh! The drinks were also amazing. They have outdoor patio seating which was nice.
Pizza and Beer
The second night we ate pizza at a cool spot downtown called Cornerstone which had great microbrew beers on tap and brick oven pizza. The pizza was pretty good!
Smoothies, Açaí Bowls, and Juices
The last day we got Açaí bowls at this cute little juicery called Love Shack Juicery I got the Green Bowl and it was just what I was craving after eating all the seafood and pizza. It was refreshing and not too sweet like some açaí bowls I’ve had.
Drinks, Live Music and Appetizers
If you are looking for happy hour/apps and maybe some live music, the Front Porch Piano Bar is the spot to go. The fried calamari was a big hit there.
All and all it was a great trip. I’d go back for the beach, coastal views, and lobster rolls. Hopefully you found this travel guide helpful!
