Margaritas made with Fresh Lime Juice & “Spicy” Tequila (low-in-sugar)

May 2, 2019 by MGal

It’s almost Cinco De Mayo and I don’t know about you but I’m so looking forward to making all the Mexican food this weekend. Since it falls on a Sunday this year, I’ll be making some homemade Huevos Rancheros for brunch. But what I’m most looking forward to are these Margaritas made with fresh lime juice — so much better than using a sour mix (IMO) and made with way less sugar!

To make, you’ll need a strong hand or a really good lemon/lime juicer. I love this one from Amazon: Metal Lemon Lime Squeezer – Manual Citrus Press Juicer FreshForce Citrus Juicer Aluminum Lime Squeezer Yellow

I also recommend a good quality 100% agave tequila. The one I used was Tanteo’s Habanero 100% agave tequila. It’s just the right amount of spicy for me.

For your sweetener you can use agave or honey, but since honey is sweeter, you’ll need only a tablespoon vs 2 tablespoons of agave. I find these margaritas to be more on the sour side, which I like, but you can always add more sweetener if needed. Most recipes call for sour mix like triple sec, I didn’t use one here but I do like a little Cointreau for some added orange flavor which is optional.

And if you are a salt person like me, I swapped the traditional margarita salt for some pink salt instead–so good!

Fresh Lime Juice Margaritas made with “Spicy” Tequila

Recipe:

Makes 2

  • Juice of 3 limes and 1 lemon
  • 2 oz (shots) or more of 100% agave tequila, I wanted them spicy so I used Tanteo Habanero
  • 2 oz of filtered water
  • 2 tablespoons of 100% agave nectar or 1 tablespoon of honey

Directions:

  1. Add ingredients to a mixer or blender and mix/shake well.
  2. Serve on ice with salt rimmed glasses (I used Pink salt)
  3. Add more sweetener if too sour

Enjoy!

If you make these, be sure you share your creation on Instagram!
