I blinked and just like that, September is over. Sad to see September go because it’s my favorite month of the year. Here’s a few reasons why I love September: it’s the start of my favorite season, fall, pumpkin recipes, apple picking, crisper weather and my wedding anniversary.
There were a few food favorites from the month but for those of you who are just here for the turkey burger recipe, we’ll start with that.
Food Favorites
Thai Turkey Burgers
September started out really hot in Boston which meant lots of BBQ’ing. One of my favorite BBQ recipes that I plan to carry into fall are these Thai Turkey Burgers. It’s been a summer staple and is a must try recipe even if you don’t love turkey burgers. I actually caught Matt saying that he thinks that he may love these more than regular burgers.
The traditional recipe for these calls for panko breadcrumbs but since I’m now gluten-free, I swapped with flax-meal, making these fiber-full and a bit healthier.
These Thai Turkey Burgers are:
- flavorful
- spicy sweet
- tangy
- juicy
What really makes these stand out is the sriracha chipotle mayo sauce that goes along with this recipe. I can’t tell what I love more, the sauce or the burgers?!
Thai Turkey Burger Recipe
- 8 ounces of ground turkey meat
- 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs or flax-meal
- 2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
- 1 tablespoon soy sauce or coconut aminos
- 2 teaspoons sesame oil
- 2 teaspoons sriracha sauce
- 2 cloves of garlic, minced
- 1/4 teaspoon of ginger (dried is fine)
Directions
1. Combine all ingredients together and form into patties.
2. Cook on the grill or over the stove with some sesame oil or avocado oil.
Chipotle Sauce
- 2 tablespoons of mayo, I used Sir Kensington’s avocado oil mayo
- 2 teaspoons sriracha sauce, depending on how hot you want it
- 1 1/2 tablespoons of chipotle sauce
Mix together and serve with turkey burgers
These are amazing with potato buns, sliced tomato and avocado as well.
Pumpkin Recipes
Moving along, September would not be complete without some pumpkin recipes.
One of my favorites is the pumpkin granola, adapted by Minimalist Baker
I cut out the 2 tablespoons of sugar since I didn’t want mine as sweet and omitted the pecans and pepitas and it was still amazing. I love topping it over my smoothies or this Pumpkin Nice Cream
Central Public House for our Anniversary
This year we decided to save money and not go away for our 2 year anniversary, so we just went out to dinner instead to a local restaurant which just opened up in MetroWest: Central Public House. It’s the closest thing around that reminds me of city dining. The menu featured lots of local dishes and the drink selection was definitely impressive. I got the Faroe Salmon with local beets and Matt got the burger which both were delicious. For drinks I had the Lychee Martini and Matt ordered the Manhattan. Matt didn’t love his drink but I enjoyed mine. And then we split the flourless chocolate cake with vanilla ice cream for dessert and it was definitely the best part of the meal. Service was also excellent. We will be back.
Next year we have big plans to go to BANF (if you’ve been, send me your recs please!) but the dinner we had did not disappoint and is worth the drive to MetroWest if you live in the Boston area.
Fitness Favorites
Planes of Motion
My love for strength training continues but lately I’ve been focusing more on multi-planar workouts: workouts that use all three different planes of motions: sagittal (up and down, front and back), frontal (side to side) and transverse (rotational). I posted a new workout video including all three up on IG stories. Here is the link for it Multi-Planar Full Body Strength Workout .
Most workouts tend to focus on sagittal movements (think running, spinning, elliptical) and not so much frontal and transverse exercises (think lateral lunges and Russian twists). Training all three planes enhances movement, fitness and performance and integrates multiple joints at once. My goal is to incorporate all three into my workout routine and share some of these workouts with you.
Tabata Burn
My new favorite class in Boston this month is BURN Fitness’s tabata class. The class is 45 minutes and includes eight Tabatas, each with two different moves.
Tabata is a form of high intensity interval training (HIIT) which consists of 8 rounds of exercises with 20 seconds of work (HIIT) and 10 seconds of rest in between. Here is a great Tabata workout to try if you are new to this type of workout: 18 MIN FULL BODY TABATA WORKOUT
YouTube Workouts
I did a few of Pumps & Irons’s workout videos, all of which I loved, but this one in particular left my abs super sore (in a good way): Weighted Core Workout I warn you, it’s challenging. I used a 10 lb. weight but I recommend a lighter weight or no weight at all if you are new to any of the exercises in this workout.
