Ever since I tried Rebbl’s Reishi Chocolate drink, I’ve been wanting to try and make my own. This drink is so delicious! It also has amazing super food ingredients such as dark cocoa, reishi and coconut milk.
When I think of cocoa, I immediately think of antioxidants. But cocoa has many other great benefits besides containing antioxidants. It is also a great source of Iron and is one of the highest sources of Magnesium.
Did you know that over 80% of Americans are deficient in Magnesium? Magnesium is known as the relaxer mineral as it has amazing effects to the body such as helps neutralize toxins, build stronger bones and teeth, and even helps fight acid buildup (lactic acid buildup anyone)?
Cocoa also can do wonders for post-workout recovery as it contains Arginine, one of the essential amino acids that assists in muscle recovery. It’s no wonder chocolate milk is known to be a great post-workout recovery drink.
But before you go out and by some store-bought chocolate milk or a chocolate bar, look at the ingredients label as you may find lots of added sugar and possibly some artificial ingredients. And chocolate products typically contain cocoa powder and not raw cacao powder. Cocoa powder is raw cacao powder that is roasted in high temperatures. Since raw cacao is unroasted, it’s higher in antioxidants and arginine than cocoa powder.
I’ve been adding raw cacao to my smoothies, drinks, and baking for a while now. But my new favorite way to enjoy raw cacao is through my homemade elixir: Adapotogen Chocolate Milk. Basically a copy cat of the Rebbl drink, but with raw cacao instead.
I also used different adaptogens such as Ashwaghanda and Maca instead of Reishi.
Adaptogens are a class of healing plants that may help with energy, mood boosting, and anxiety, with ashwagandha being one of the top adaptogen herbs popping up everywhere. They basically help our bodies adapt to stress.
Ashwagandha is shown through studies that it may treat adrenal fatigue, reduce anxiety and depression, help with stress, and boost immunity. To read more about the benefits of this medicinal herb, check out Dr. Axe’s article about Ashwagandha Benefits Thyroid and Adrenals.
Maca has been another commonly used adaptogen that has been known to help with energy levels and boost mood. You can read more about it in my post here: Maca and its Major Health Benefits.
So when I am looking to reduce stress and boost my energy levels, or just looking for a great post workout recovery drink, this is my new go-to:
Adaptogen Chocolate Milk
RECIPE
Serves 1
- 1 cup of your favorite milk (I used this Homemade Cashew Mylk)
- 1 cup of water, heated
- 2 tablespoons raw cacao powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ashwagandha powder (optional)
- 1/2 teaspoon honey or maple syrup to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon maca powder (optional)
- 1-2 scoops of collagen {10% of with code ‘FITGREENGAL10’}– also optional but makes it super frothy!!
INSTRUCTIONS
Add all ingredients to a high speed blender and blend on low, being careful to secure the top so that the liquid doesn’t explode.
Serve on ice or chill for later.
NOTE: I like to heat the water so that the maca, ashwaganda and cacao “brew” slightly.
Hope you all enjoyed this recipe!
