You may have heard all the hype around bone broth or have tried the latest skin care product on the market with collagen in it. But what is collagen, exactly and why might you want to consider including it in your diet?
Collagen is the most abundant protein in our body. It makes up 90% of our connective tissue and bone mass as well as 70% of our skin.
In our mid-20’s, our bodies start producing less collagen, which means skin starts to lose its elasticity, bones become weaker and joints become stiffer. So how can you incorporate collagen into your diet?
There are different forms of collagen, with one of the most highly bio-available ones being Further Collagen Protein Peptides.* Collagen Peptides is a short chain of amino acids that comes in a powdered form. You may get benefits of collagen through bone broths or in the form of a pill, but given collagen peptides’ 90% bioavailability, it’s more quickly absorbed by our bodies. In fact, your body starts absorbing it within 6 hours of intake to start repairing immediately. It’s also easy to digest, flavorless and a great protein to add in your smoothie, morning cup of joe (or matcha), or oatmeal.
Being an active person in my early 30’s, it’s important to me that my bones remain strong and joints healthy. I’ve been recently incorporating collagen peptides into my diet to help rebuild some of the collagen that my body may not be producing anymore and have already noticed a difference in how I feel and look. And an added bonus, it may help reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
Collagen may also help with digestive issues, such as leaky gut and is also supposed to be great for your hair and nails.
I love adding it in with my Matcha Tea which makes it super creamy and frothy. See my recipe below. My husband loves it in his morning coffee and makes this Iced Coffee Latte Recipe almost everyday!
Matcha Tea Latte
Recipe:
1 cup of heated water
1 cup of your favorite heated milk
1-2 scoops of Further Food Collagen Peptides (use discount code FITGREENGAL10 to receive 10% off + free shipping)*
1 teaspoon of organic, high-quality Matcha Tea – I use Midori Spring Gold Class
1/2 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of Maca Root Powder*
1 teaspoon of Brain Octane Oil (optional)*
Instructions:
Add all ingredients except milk and water to a high speed blender. Heat the water and milk together over the stove or in the microwave to just below boiling point. Add the water and milk to your blender and blend on a “stir” or low power setting, being careful of securing the top (it comes up and could burn you). I do not recommend using a small blender because it will explode (I learned the hard way with my Hamilton Beach Blender).
Enjoy!
